Michael Shannon directs an adaptation of Brett Ne veu’s 2002 play about a m other coping with the fallout after her son murders three of his high school classmates. Janice (Judy Greer ) is struggl ing; s he moves through life as if in a haze, unable t o let go of her anger and frustrat ion. Whi le her husband (Alexander Skarsgård) has found refuge at a new church, Janice finds it hard to seek solace in her fa ith despite her pasto r’s pleas to heal he r wounds by meeting with the mothers of her son’s vic tims. As Janice ponders what that mee ting could achieve for her and her community, Eric LaRue asks audiences to w itness the frayed emotiona l ripples that violent a cts can engender. Anchor ed by Greer’s deeply arresti ng per formance, Shannon’s dire ctorial debu t grapples head-on with f rustra ting ly ti mely conversa tions abou t who des erves our c ompassion and grace. Standout supporting turns by T racy Letts and A lison Pill, who c aptu re a subtly unnerving vision of spiritual fanaticis m, stress the film's interest i n complicating facile views of atone ment and forgiveness in l ight of suc h tragedies.
